However there is a group of people that I am a part of that do get to know the animals of their preference, dog breeders/ show people. We need to know all about the dogs physical make up, even it's precise movements because we are breeding for these very things.
I love to deer hunt and observing them is important and I especially like to bow hunt because the deer needs to be very close to have a responsible shot, 30 yards is my personal outer limit. I love the challenge between myself and the deer, getting one in close enough to shoot is exciting, sometimes it can be a long waiting game ( even though the deer do not understand the game), it's all about being better than their natural protective skills and I like to eat venison. With all this said I still do not know the deer and their movements as well as I should.

However much you may enjoy hunting, your motivation is less than what it was for many ancient hunters.  They, too, may have enjoyed the thrill of the hunt, but for them, it was also a life and death matter.  For you, if you fail to kill a deer, you go home and eat anyway.  So there really isn't the same sort of situation at all.  If you wanted to experience something more like what ancient people experienced, you would need to get far enough away from civilization that you cannot easily get back, and not take enough to eat while you are away, so that it will be life and death for you whether you manage to find food or not.  Even that will be somewhat artificial, as you would be choosing it when it suits you, rather than having the situation forced on you continuously.  But that would give you a closer experience.

I wasn't trying to compare my hunting with those in the past who had to be successful or go hungry, on the contrary I was trying to show how much difference there was. I pointed out that I lacked all the skill set they had especially when it comes to getting close enough to make a kill with primitive weapons.
Now to address your doubt that I could go out into the wild and last for an extended amount of time, I assure you I could, with today's modern weapons, securing meat would be no problem, I like to shoot long range so a kill at a few hundred yards even on small game would be no problem, I also can trap small game without steel traps and actually make the traps from what I would find in the woods. Fishing is a forte for me so catching them would actually be a fun and productive time, in the spring bird eggs are available everywhere. Snakes are a good source of protein and easy to catch. There are so many plants to eat in the wild it's easy to have a variety, wild onions grow everywhere, mushrooms are a good source of food, then there are berries and pine nuts and on and on I could go. Fires are easy to start even when wood is wet, been there done that before. Shelters, I'm a wood worker and know how to build and build strong with specific joints that would last a long time without nails, screws or glue and, well I know how to make glue from animals and fish, even know how to preserve animal hides for what ever I might need them for. It pays to be a country boy who loves the outdoors.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
