The air echelon of US Marine Fighter Squadron 211 secretly flew 12 F4F-3 fighters from Ewe to Ford Island for further transfer to USS Enterprise. Later on the same day, USS Enterprise set sail for Wake Island. En route, Captain G. D. Murray of the USS Enterprise informed his subordinates that the carrier was now operating under war conditions.

Nine days later, on entry into Pearl Harbor, Adm. William Halsey said "When we're finished with them the Jap language will only be spoken in Hell."

On this date in 1893, Elizabeth Yates was elected mayor of Onehunga, New Zealand,  becoming the first female mayor anywhere in the British Empire.

Her first act as mayor was to proclaim an anti-Viking edict, titled 'Come At Us Sven. See What Happens.'
