Sappho: I suppose the simple answer is that I have a great deal of empathy, and the thought of others suffering makes me sad. If I deliberately hurt anyone, I would feel a huge sense of guilt. My body "knows" it is wrong, and it lets me know in no uncertain terms. Helping people on the other hand makes me feel happy, as I feel their happiness
That's a kind of evolutionary explanation. Anything else I say will probably ultimately be a rationalization. But after all my life experiences, I feel that everything is better for everyone if we look after each other. This applies doubly to (non-human) animals because they are so vulnerable and rely on us for their wellbeing. I value everyone's life, I consider them the most precious commodity. The happier they can be, the better those lives will be. I find this fundamentally more important than anything else, it's the foundation.
It's important to note that I do have to look after myself, too. I don't extend making people happy to allowing them to hurt me.
Brian: That was very "Christian" yeah
Sorry, no Jesus for me so I guess he'll be roasting my nuts with his love.
