Actually, it has more to do with the Stockholm syndrome. Africans generally adopt the religion of their captors. It was easy for slavers to come in and prove to the Africans that their superstitions were unfounded. As slaves in America Christianity was generally forced on the slaves. Though many rejected it, they had to wear the mask of piety.
Probably you would see more Black atheists if more atheists had been slave owners.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.
