Some people project their preconceptions onto what others say and thus simple conversation has to be filled with all kinds of cumbersome and truly unnecessary qualifiers just to avoid being misunderstood. When I say "people like you" I mean "people like you who ask whites to check their privilege". "People like me" means "people like me who find that attitude condescending."
BTW I'm more white than you: Dutch-English and a Mayflower decendent no less. ;-P
And I live in a Chicago Neighborhood that is 90% African-American, 8% Hispanic, and 2% White.
