Race is a term used to classify people according to physical appearance, ancestry, history and culture - Usually with race comes culture and background - Please notice that I'm not saying that's always the case, it's just a reliable indicator... None of us is 100% pure in terms of ancestry because evolutionary we are constantly changing, but most people have a noticeably stronger ancestry that denotes a certain culture or background. For example, asians are usually from Asia (continent) and share culture, whether it's Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc - Black people have very recent African ancestry (we all have it, technically black people just have more noticeable ancestry), etc - It's not the only way to categorize Humans and it certainly shouldn't be the primary indicator, the only thing that matters about race, and it's probably what causes racism, is that we have a tendency to prefer people who look like us and have a similar background, which is actually quite understandable.
I never thought asians were white, but I used to wrongly think all asians looked alike, which is curious because some asians think the same about white people - It may be very offensive for a Jap to be compared to a Chinese, so don't that if you're in Japan, and vice-versa - Asian countries have different ethnicities, and some of them make a point to distinguish themselves from others, as if, hypothetically speaking, we were comparing Germans who are whiter with Italians who a are a bit darker and more southern - Due to past conflicts (and sometimes present) asian countries don't always get along and citizens of each country may dislike citizens from the neighbor country.
