Yeah, it's strange how otherwise intelligent people can do mental gymnastics to justify their beliefs. And a little scary.
I think what helped me was that my mom was never a firm believer. My father was, and thoughts were definitely a sin in his book (though they're less so now). She never had time for church, and she broke one of the commandments every week -- Not working on the Sabbath. (She's a Doctor).
I think a lot of it comes from not actually reading the bible. I mean you know all that stuff is in there, but until you really read it you don't get a good idea of just how out there some of it really is.
