The purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure that the slave owners had guns available to kill any slaves that dared to start a rebellion. But before the ink was dry on the Constitution there were various State laws passed which tried to restrict the concealed carrying of pistols. Evidently too many white guys were getting shot.
And we all know about the numerous Western towns where the local sheriff was more than happy to kill anyone who dared wear a gun in his town. Hollywood made a million movies with that story line.
When magazine advertising became popular over 100 years ago gun ads depicted little kids sleeping with their own pistols because they were so safe. And 60 years ago the magazines were full of Christmas ads showing Dad, Mom, and the kids each with their own new guns that they just got for Christmas presents.
I think the current whining that happens when a white guy shoots up a school is funny. That's what white guys like to do. Cops like to shoot black people. Black people like to shoot black kids and each other. Muslims like to blow themselves up. People are basically insane and 10,000 new gun laws won't do very much to improve people's sanity.
It's been estimated that there are already 20,000 assorted gun laws in the US. Of course the people who want more gun laws claim that's not an accurate number and that it's much lower.
One thing is for sure: if a person really wants a gun he can always steal one from a cop. No background check required.
