You don't seem to be getting it.
Atheism is not a dogmatic position. It is a provisional one.
The vast majority of atheists disbelieve because there has never been a convincing case to support the existence of a god. Our minds are open to evidence and reasoned argument.
I would start believing in a god as soon as I was presented with demonstrable evidence and reasoned argument to support the claim. This is the opposite to having a closed mind.
Please don't confuse being open minded with being gullible.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
