I would like to say the same thing, but it can get more subtle than that. My management would find other reasons, they do waves of layoffs not all that uncommonly. It would not take much to get me on that list.
This is interesting, and something I didn't think about when I started this thread: This probably varies a lot by geographical region. I live in the midwestern US as a transplant, where most people identify as Christian, and there are cultish churches all over. When asked point blank, (which fortunately does not happen commonly), I tell people I grew up with the Episcopal church (this is true), or am "unaffiliated". I think my coworkers currently think I am Jewish, so I let them believe that.
If The Flintstones have taught us anything, it's that pelicans can be used to mix cement.
