The serpent told the truth. God didn't want Adam and Eve to have this knowledge of good and evil, so he made up a story to tell them why they shouldn't eat the fruit.
Instead of just not making the fruit in the first place. That would have been simpler and he needn't have lied and been outwitted by a serpent.
It may well be the stupidest story ever told. God is supposed to be the hero of the book, but instead the serpent comes off looking better, and God appears to be an incompetent, scheming little twat.
