The elder Bush, whom I never supported to begin with, lost any claim on my respect for several reasons, of which I'll list just a few:
1) Having correctly called out Reagan on his "Voodoo Economics", he became Reagan's lap dog and the chief espouser of the very bullshit he once denounced when he realized he needed it to get elected in '88. This led to his absurd "Read My Lips" stance that he had to renege on when his people finally got it through his head how fucking stupid the pledge was.
2) He lied through his teeth about Iran/Contra.
3) He threw the Iraqi Shia under the bus, first calling on them to rise up against Hussein during the Gulf War, and then allowing Hussein to use his aerial gunships to slaughter them en masse as part of the negotiated peace. And we wonder why the Shia didn't welcome us with open arms when W. blundered into Iraq. Fucking Christ!
There's more . . . much more. But I maintain that, as bad as he was, he was a statesman compared to W. and apparently a hell of a lot brighter than that empty suit, Jeb.
