In other words, you're just assuming things. Also, how many people complained? Two? Fifty? And a 50-48 split really isn't that great of a difference between Dems and Reps either.
Given the area, they are most likely professing christians, but you doubt that for some reason. Why should we believe it's liberal atheists? It's not like there isn't a history of one christian denomination being against something a different denomination does. Or even within the same denomination.
