God knows there would be people looking for guidance. Islam is about providing enlightenment and a path to follow, it's about providing guidance so people are guided through the Mastery of God from the darkness to the light. There is no path straighter then that of an example of another. Outward actions show only so much of the path while a vision of the inward spirit of actions is needed to imitate to ascend the straight path.
The book of God not only emphasized on a book from God but upon leaders and Guides from God. It emphasized that God chose Imams like Ibrahim, Isaac, and Yaqoub in the past. It emphasized that they would guide people by God's Command. It showed aside from their leadership as Prophets they were bestowed a leadership that for example Ibrahim attained after being a Messenger and Prophet. This leadership is comprehensive guidance and leading upon the journey through out the journey.
The guidance is that of God's Name, "by the name of God is it's sailing and anchoring", and the final covenant and path God wants people to take has been described as:
Say: no wage do I ask for it except who wants to take towards his a lord a path
Say: no wage do I ask for it except the love in my near kin.
Say: whatever wage I have asked for it so then it is for yourselves.
Loving the family of Mohammad is loving both God and the light of God in humanity, it's to love the pure praise that is to God in humanity and appreciating the treasures of God in all humans, by foremost appreciating the best of humans. It's also loving the path that is towards God and it's loving those who are close and near to God, and it's loving sincerity to God and it's loving the exalted reason and reflection the Quran calls to, and it's loving Mohammad and his example, and it's loving the companionship and guidance of Mohammad, which is the guidance of God.
Whoever tries to by pass the wage of the message, is shown, that he doesn't appreciate the message as it ought to be appreciated.
