I think this tragedy probably has the same magnitude as 9/11 for Americans. I didn't understand 9/11 back then because I was a kid, but I recall watching it on TV. Now I understand better, I feel scared and shocked even though I'm not French and don't live in France.
When 9/11 happened the US hadn't had the same sort pf terrorism that we have had in Europe. In the UK we had the IRA in France Algerian separatists and so on. To a certain extent we're used to it.
On Another note, all the targets last night were soft targets with no military value. They are getting desperate.
