Truth is, you can always cherry pick what your particular book provides. If you're only looking for the good, you find that, if you're looking for the bad, you find that too. Islam isn't as doctrinal as the catholic church in any case, since none of their different branches have some ultimate authority giving the marching orders. It's up to the individual preacher what he wants to convey.
What little I know of the Quran, it's as contradictive as the bible. There are passages arguing for being mild and tolerant and there are of course the vile verses.
