They will laugh in private, sure, but since religion is kind of wish-washy grounds in general, they don't know if doing it publicly might offend or upset someone.
I don't know, based on the time it was made i'm inclined to say he's a liberal christian, but based on what he says and his attitude i'm inclined to say atheist.
Either way, it doesn't really matter.
