Indoctrination is a big factor.
It's so powerful that I think it is probably often fruitless to seek other explanations when it has occured. The mind is really good at throwing up defences against anything that threatens its deeply held lifelong beliefs.
Even for those who aren't indoctrinated, they are often saturated in a particular religion's mythology.
At the end of the day though, everyone is different. Everyone will have their own reasons.
