Politcal interest. Mecca vs Medina. Getting to the core of the matter without religious woo is usually the best way to go. And that's what it was at it's core. A war of interests and trading opportunities.

The core of Muslims during that era was natives of Mecca; actually. Mohammed himself was from Mecca.
Actually, the fight was between relatives, family. Muslims had to fight their own families.
