What is a drawing of Muhammad?

What is a drawing of Muhammad?
What qualifies something to be a drawing of Muhammad?

We sometimes see Muslims protesting on streets and throwing bombs on people who draw Muhammad or make contests in drawing him, but how can they tell something is a drawing of Muhammad?

If I drew a stick figure or something equally simplistic would that actually be a picture of Muhammad?

How can Muslims tell? Only because I say so? Is it offensive?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I dunno, but they've also gone apeshit over squiggles on socks. Looking hard for any excuse to release some rage.

I suspect (and I’m no expert) that is the intent behind the artwork that causes offense. If I were to paint a picture of a Muslim man in period costume and title it ‘Ibn Mustafanibble Contemplating The Sunset’, no one would bat an eye. If, however, I titled it, ‘The Prophet (Peace But Upon Him!) Contemplating The Sunset’, I’d be slit up a treat. I also imagine that if I were to draw a bowl of fruit and title it, ‘The Prophet At Rest’, I’d be in for it.

If ANY piece of artwork is said to be of Muhammad, it’s the act of calling it so that makes it haram.

Interestingly enough, the Q’ran doesn’t forbid artistic depictions of the Prophet. It’s a tradition with no real basis in Islamic scripture.

Poor old Mo, so fragile he can be hurt by a picture!

The biblical origins as well as the quranic, hadith, and historic origins of this prohibition are easy to summarize and contextualize. Big mo and/or his (alleged)biographers believed that other abrahamics were committing idolatry with all of the christian shrines that had become popular in the newly conquered regions. Now, muslims follow their own rules as much as anyone else, so there are plenty of images of big mo from islamic regimes, but it's worth noting that islamic artists went to great lengths to self censor their work so as to stay within what they believed the letter of the law would be.

It's not a new thing that they just plucked out of the air. It just seems as silly as the rest of their religion does.

In the 7th century Byzantine Empire there was also this situation in which believers were told by their leaders that worshiping the pictures of Jesus and the saints was idolatry. So many of the magnificent byzantine mosaics etc. were damaged, hidden or replaced by a simple cross.

In Islam the prophet had ordered his followers to not even put his sayings (hadiths) in written format. And they obeyed him for almost 200 years. So both the Hadiths and the pictures of the prophet started to appear toward the 10th century, mostly based on oral traditions and some verbal descriptions.

That’s what the prophet wanted. He knew that his teachings would start “evolving” over time so he made the decision of leaving us with a simple legacy which is the holy book itself.

So that’s the only element in this story that has some sort religious basis of some sort.

Otherwise, the religion of the masses is not just “The Opium of the masses”. Unfortunately in some churches or religious groups (many actually), it’s still being used as a tool to keep everyone in line and it is very fear based because fear is the most simple way of controlling other people. So they will take the simple reality I stated above and they will exaggerate things, they add new things, they will spice with anger toward dominant social classes or hatred toward the dominant economies of our time. Then they will create unreal enemies and direct all the frustration of their followers toward these targets etc.

Besides: There are images from the life of the prophet in Iranian and ottoman book illustration that show him as a flame, as a person whose face is covered or as a bearded person like any other person in the illustration.

This is From Al-Biruni (Iran / 13th century, Currently inthe National Library in France)

Here the prophet is seen preachin ghis earliest followers in Mecca. There is this one and many others if you search for it  Cool

The beheading of the French History, geography and civil education teacher in October 2020 is a typical illustration of how far people are able to misunderstand any type of teaching that are provided to them.
I just read that Paty had even allowed the students who would feel offended by his display of Mohammad comics to temporarily leave the classroom if they wanted to. So I’m still thinking “What else could he possibly do?” Sad

In the article, you can see how all these terrorist event are pushing people (all around the world) to hold on more firmly to their republican / secular values and national identity and Self-love as human beings. In the meantime, “Islam” has become what the Roman Catholic Church was in the 10th century or so, calling people to do all sorts of irrational action in order to avoid the flames of hell and other stuff like that. Sad

People earnestly attempting to follow their irrational religions will routinely fail to manifest the intended or alleged outcomes. You can hardly blame them, even when they reach rock bottom and have the slightest glimpse of reality and self realization....because helpful idiots the world over will keep telling them that there's some good in that horrid shit, that they're just doing it wrong.

Back to the grind they go, trying to do irrational shit right...again and again and again.
