Things like speculating that an imbalance in the numbers of males and females points to a slaughter of the first-born males sometime earlier. It doesn't; male births have a higher mortality rate than female births.
Male deaths at births were not the only thing being counted. it was male mortality rates between birth and like 10 years old, that were found in a mass grave. not just new borns.
