Slave is a title, and a set of negative stereotypes you assign to a word. When in reality the definition of slavery has nothing to do with the stereotypes. Bottom line it is possible to fall into the definition of slavery and elect to do so. Not only that, thrive and be even happy. IF the work environment is regulated humanely.
Why do you think the Nike factory can only pay 35 cents an hour (before that 16 cents an hour?) why do you think people kept coming back even after they were beaten/whipped for not meeting quota? Because they all know Nike may only offer 1000 'jobs' at a given factory and there are 10's of thousands if hundreds of thousands of people all super desperate to sell their souls to the company just to get that 35 cents an hour. because their is nothing else besides mosquito farming.
When you look down at what people like nike are doing. You do so because YOU would not want to work there under those conditions, the desperate people of a given 3rd world region see slavery to a corporation like Nike as an opportunity. Not as something to avoid.
Our role should not be one to ignore and lie to ourselves so that companies like nike go unregulated, just so d-bags like you can pretend to be better than every generation that has come before you. Our role should be to own our own dependence on slavery so we can over see and try and make the slave situation more better for those who were born in the wrong part of the world. Like it or not sport, every aspect of modern life has been touched by a modern slaves hands in one way or another. Their is a reason America does not make Anything any more, and why unregulated nations like china make everything.
To hide your head in the sand and pretend that you do not contribute to slavery make you far worse a person than those who owned and beat slaves hundreds of years ago. You are not only denying them access to a modern life that would rival the life of any king of old, but you also have turned them over to be treated any way their task masters would like. All because you want to pretend modern life has freed the slaves.
