your right , things went very wrong
lust for power between the different "tribes" was the root of it all
and it still exists today unfortunately i.e Sunni Shia quarrels
but even the Prophet predicted it
he said "The Christians and Jews have broken up into 72 groups and My nation will break up into 73 groups and only 1 will enter Heaven"
they let go of the religion and wanted to do things their way, and hence the result we have today, crazy people under the name of Islam who have missed the whole point of it
