Death is real everyday, though indeed it's something rather abstract. But one could die everyday, as for example car accidents aren't exactly uncommon.
As for atheist being afraid - I'm an atheist and I see no reason for fear. I didn't exist for million of years and after this brief interlude I will not exist for millions of year to come, nothing to be afraid of, just reason to make good use of life.
The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.
