It's probably many things. I'm gay, I can tell you it's not a choice (well, the sex is, but the attraction I mean) and probably just how my brain is wired up. I don't know anything more than that but I can vouch for it not being a choice.
That said, even if it was totally a choice, that still doesn't justify the gay-bashing. Saying "homosexiality is unnatural" is a non-argument. First off it's victimless, and how many things does every person do every day that isn't natural? You wake up with a man-made roof over your head, drive a car to work and eat shitty processed foods. I can't take the "it's unnatural" argument seriously unless it comes from the mouth of someone living naked out in the forest.
I don't believe that it is a choice but I don't find it easy to completely dismiss the idea that it isn't a choice.
I have feelings of empathy and I get a "thrill" or whatever you want to call it from doing something reasonably kind.
But if I had been a child and my emotional development was fucked in some way I might not have empathy, or as much empathy, I might have more anger.
Now I could sit here as either a psychopath or a person with empathy and say, yep I can vouch that I just am this way.
I'm not saying that empathy is the same as sexuality, I'm just putting forward the question of how confidently can we really say what is just fundamentally and biologically our natural behaviour and what caused by some thing outside of that.
And yeh it's a question about whether the answer to this question justifies violence against someone. A choice or not, natural or not, I don't see a justification for violence.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
