One possible answer is that the detectives wanted this to happen, so that after the attack has already occurred, there's more reason for people to hate the Muslims.

Uniquely Islam is filled with piety, self loathing (becuase it knows its a plagarism and is open to mockery) and self righteousness. A nasty little cocktail indeed. Just like in any social grouping there are bad ones and mostly good ones, Islam is no different. What is misunderstood is like people of all faiths muslims use their humanism and not their faith to break through the religious assertive and aggressive undertones and interact with people normally.
