I actually think preaching to people when they're not in a vulnerable position is actually more likely to push them in the direction of atheism (or at least irreligion). It tends to be an overt display of the total lack of grounding, logic and evidence. Of course, having someone surrounded and using massive peer pressure makes them vulnerable too.
On this forum, even when people are vulnerable and a theist smells blood, I've observed that it still hurts their cause. The desperation on show, and the flawed logic presented to someone who has probably just started properly thinking for themself makes the religion they just left look that bit more ridiculous.
