Whilst I agree that insulting a judge is a bad idea, no judge should be able to give apparently arbitrary sentences for swearing. A year is ridiculous. It should be a day, tops. Put him in the cells, give him a few hours to calm down, and ask him if he wants to apologize. If he refuses, keep him in overnight.
No doubt. A year is absolutely stupid. Also, there is something to be said for a "crime of passion" in this instance, I would be livid at this judge were it my daughter, and would have a very difficult time controlling myself.
