Oh he's on board alright, if anything he hates religion even more than I do after a lifetime of that bullshit. We decided there are only two choices we can offer his family. Either they accept our atheism and the non-religious upbringing of our kids, or they can choose to be estranged from their oldest son until they accept it. If they choose the second, it will just be another tragic reminder of how religion divides hearts and minds, and creates unnecessary conflict between people who might otherwise be close.
