At it's core It is a behavioral actions set outside of conditions defined by comparison to a set standard. Now much like bi polar disorder diagnosis of said disorder or sin, does not require the subject's consent nor acknowledgement. You do not have to recognize the authority of the people making the diagnosis, nor accept or even want to follow the standards in which you are judged by. Even so, the one who does acknowledge this standard can look at your 'fruit' and make that determination on your behalf.
So like it or not I can identify sin in your life. I then can say you are a slave to sin because you will not be able to stop behaving sinfully. Just like if you were bi polar and were diagnosed as such, despite whether or not you acknowledge the diagnosis you would not be able to operate outside the parameters defined by the proper diagnosis of your disorder.
