We understand it all too well, way better than almost every Christian I've ever heard talk about the subject.

And I've said before, as atheists we are in the best position to learn the real "meaning" of the book (what you can actually learn from it) and Christians are in the worst position. In much the same way, someone who thinks a comic strip super hero is real will be worst placed to notice any underlying commentary the story is making.
