RE: I almost got into an accident and it's been on my mind all day...

Glad you're okay. Scary events like that can stick with you for a while, however, no one got hurt and this will be a valuable lesson for you in the future.
The instructor was over the top telling you that you could have killed someone, but given that none of us were in the car to see how fast the other guy was driving, it very well could have been more than just a fender bender.
I was at a two way stop sign 23 years ago. Cross street traffic didn't have to stop, so they had the right of way. I looked left, right then left again and proceeded to cross. Had the car that was flying down the road not been traveling twice the speed limit, I could have made it across safely. When I saw him, he was far enough away so that I felt it was okay to cross. He hit my right front quarter panel at 60 miles an hour (speed limit was 30). This cause my car to face to the left and because he still had so much momentum, he then ass-ended me.
My seat belt broke with the first impact causing me to fly out of my seat to the passengers side where I busted out the side window with my head. When he ass-ended me, I almost went through the windshield. My car ended up over a curb and down into a ravine. It wasn't pretty. The guy tried going after my drivers license claiming that I cut him off, but his 40 feet worth of skidmarks prior to the impact were proof that he was indeed going twice the speed limit. He was heavily fined and walked away without a scratch, while I have had life long back, hip and knee issues. I've also shrunk two inches due to the seven discs in my lower back that were herniated from that accident.
Three years ago my car thought it could fly when we had a freak snow storm in late March. Basically, my car skidded off the road, jumped a concrete barrier for a large drainage pipe and landed 70 feet from where it took off. I wasn't hurt, but my air bags failed to deploy when my front end hit the ground first.
