One of the oldest believes, actually. Much older than christianity. The Greeks believed in caves being the entrance to the underworld. They had no concept of heaven or hell, but they believed it to be the realm of the dead. And all through the Middle Ages, people believed smoke rising up from cracks in the ground to be emanations of hell.
So, common superstitions, several thousands of years old.
