But what's an attack? This is going to be very simplistic cause my brain is getting sleepy.
If person A says "you know an orange is an apple."
and person B says "actually an orange is an orange, see here is an orange and here is an apple. You can see they are different."
person A says "Stop attacking my beliefs!"
Is that really person's B's fault for making person A feel under attack?
Well lets start with the fact that its not as simple as saying an orange is an apple. These are deeply held beliefs that are extremely personal. You have to remember that they don't see it in black and white terms like you. I think its fair to use as an example the fact that you incorrectly spelled cognitive dissonance in an earlier post. I could have made you feel stupid by pointing it out and saying that you shouldn't be using a term that you don't even know how to spell. But instead I used the correct spelling in my post without making a huge issue. I'm sure you googled it or whatever to make sure that I was correct. If I did flat out call you out, I would be right but I probably wouldn't have made you feel all warm and fuzzy about it. What I mean by that is that you'd think I was a dick if I acted like a dick about it. Right or wrong. That example is apples and oranges. So now you have to put yourself into a theist shoes, maybe they are flat our wrong in your opinion. But you can just google, "does god exist" and the answer is more than clear with no debate. So, its not necessarily person b's fault for person A feeling under attack. But again, to your OP, a more effective way to get a theist to think is to let them explain themselves in a circle without having to truly raise any objections. You can do this simply by only asking questions. Then without you knowing it, they'll do their own research. If they're honest, they'll come to the honest conclusion.
