If it hasn't happened earlier.
In this regard, I am somewhat Libertarian-leaning. It horrifies me when either side tries to use the power of government to punish people into behaving socially as they think makes for a "better world". I worry about going too far with gun restriction laws, for instance... and the notion of using force to go after people for what they say/wear (etc.) gives me the cold shivers.
That said, I find the conservatives who used the Drug War to silence the counterculture and minority rights groups, and spread decades of propaganda lies to fuel the rise of expensive, oversized, and militarized police units (while stuffing prisons full), who dismantled our environmental protection laws to suit the bottom lines of corporate donors at the expense of the health and safety of poor Americans (See Moore's article on what happened in Flint, Michigan, for instance: http://michaelmoore.com/10FactsOnFlint/) to be much, much worse.
I'm kinda there with you. I'm right in the cross-hairs of the conflict between being very liberal/progressive and libertarian.
I understand the need for gun controls and support many of them. But I do have a problem when a very left wing says all my guns have to be in a lock up or I can only own one or two guns. Or I can't transport them to a range without a special case or permit when I could just take the bolt out. None of this is law, but it is proposed out of the left wing.
I'm also very libertarian when it comes to the first amendment. People should be able to say whatever they want and when we get into the realm of worrying about libel and slander over opinionated speech that's a dangerous slippery slope.
I don't know what label I would fall under in the first amendment when it comes to "make no law respecting an establishment of religion" as I take that to mean government won't make a law that has anything to do with religion. I think that covers abortion, as the designation of "a human life" should be left to science. As well as other issues with it such as hobby lobby.
I also but heads with the left and libertarian views when it comes to trade. I think trade helps a world economy and world peace. I think it prevents nations from going to war and I think it spreads ideas and culture. Sure it moves jobs around and causes exploitation, I'm not claiming it's perfect or even "good". I think it's the best choice from a whole lot of rough and some really bad choices.
