No actually it is all perfectly legal in most states.
Just like the rich the religious, even if not all, far too many don't understand the difference between legal and moral, and treat everything as a blanket solution.
I know what physical abuse did to me and to my dad he had no clue what he was doing to me. He like many parents thought it was "tough love". But unless you have a clinical psychology, psychiatry degree you have no real understanding what even your "good intent" with "tough love" can do to a child. You cannot treat all kids as the same. Just because you get submission by force does not make it moral.
Might does not make right, it simply makes you a bully.
