The Ottoman empire, while oppressive in many ways, never enforced social or religious issues. As long as you paid your dues, you were welcome. Everyone having just a bit of historical knowledge, would barf over what the Saudis or ISIL call a caliphate. It's urinating on the caliphates of old. Tolerant and curious communities that did more to preserve and further knowledge than any christian culture before the Rennaissance.
