Well when you consider the genesis of conservative movements in Europe, which was essentially groups of monarchists getting together and implementing a policy of returning (or keeping) the absolute monarchist systems being then eroded in their countries. In fact the original Conservative party grew out of the old Tory party (named after an anglisation of an Irsh word for brigand), who thought the civil war and later glorious revolution were a horrible mistake, it makes sense. Conservative means preserving the mores of the past in the present a lot more than it means economic liberalisn.
