When belief in holy genocide becomes a norm, societies go mad. And sane people do insane things.
It really does boil down to that. One of my favorite quotes is from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: "But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” Rather than destroy a piece of ourselves, we too often look for justifications for the wrong we do upon others. Rather than introspect and suss out what is the right course by our own moral lights, we too often instead reach out for "morality" to justify our base motives and actions.
