Sex and religion has always been ill-rational enemies. You figure they make natural allies in order to help their own cause, but no! They use it has a fear tactic, countering the human minds own urges with invented self control, There was never a rational need for such believe systems, even as Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons we were able to figure out that sex is as important as food. Now, if you want to make a point that religious suppression of sex has helped mankind, you make the argument that in theory these actions were an attempt at a early form "Selected Breeding". This concept though as too many flaws to be considered useful. Maelstrom does make a good point though, they have found a way to use it for their own gain through out history.
In today's world, at least in my own experiences. Sexual relations is quite difficult to find, I'm not not best looking person, but I'm far from the worst looking person. The matter of my profession and my general cash flow limits me in this regard. This is the story for a lot of people in the world though, religious leaders may by wrong on many fronts, but they the kings and queens in the pussy determent.
