According to the gunman's father, it's a homophobic crime:

“This had nothing to do with religion … but he got really angry when he saw two men kissing in downtown Miami a couple of months ago,” the father reportedly said, according to MSNBC. His father also said Mateen had a associates degree in criminal justice, and was working a security job. He lived in a condo with his wife and 3-year-old son in Port Saint, Florida.

But I don't see that that is a distinction that matters. Islam is even more gay intolerant than evangelical christianity. I can't imagine his homophobia is unrelated to Islam.

I also doubt even more stringent gun control would have stopped him. He was a rent a cop who had and even under stricter controls would have had plenty of gun access.
