No, the point is that when you spew vitriol in the past you'll have to answer for it. Clinton's team no doubt has video of each ugly sentiment Trump has shopped out to the public, will hammer him with those clips.

This, I think, is a foreigner's misreading of American politics in play. Firstly, Clinton is playing to the Democrat base, not alienating them. Secondly, you're entirely ignoring the fact that Trump, in the "fight" he's put up for the center, has issued such extreme statements on so many issues that he's alienated women, blacks, Latinos, and gays. Discounting the overlap between those groups he's still kept his base pissed-off white men.
That's not how you win an election in America.
