Actually yes they did. I would suggest you study up on the Age of Enlightenment which was a movement in thought in Europe during the 18th century which was forged by a lot of brilliant thinkers, some of which were theists, who pursued reason and the scientific method to "learn the mind of God." So yeah...actually man gave himself science via the handy dandy brain sacky.
