uggh, gross. There isn't a coming showdown, by the way, we are just continuing the conflict that's happened for 1000 years. Islam and Europe, (now the west) have pretty much always had conflict to one degree or another. This isn't anything new. Actually I think you could make a good argument that there is far less conflict now then in the past. In fact the 'showdown' that you speak of is ratcheting down, rather then up. Remember that in the past Muslims have full out invaded Europe through Turkey into the Balkins and also through Morroco and into Spain. Crusaders equally invaded Islamic lands and occupied them. Historians in the far future will probably look at it as a continuation of past conflict in previous centuries rather then something new, which we only view it that way because of the brevity of our lives and lack of historical context.
As for the child being one less combatant, we can never know now. He might have been the next Gandhi who brought peace to the middle east or the next Osama Bin Laden. That life was stolen and we can't know. What we do know is that is that we have a history of arming our future enemies. I think the men who killed that child are far more likely to be our next enemy then the child himself.
