The founding documents and the founding fathers lend an immense amount of stability throughout the centuries. Whatever the disagreements are in US politics, the buck usually stops at the founding fathers and their documents.
The ideals expressed in our documents are beautiful things. The practice is obviously imperfect; we obviously still have a long ways to go.
The bizarre part, to me, is the thinking that implies that because these men had these grand ideals on some subjects, everything they thought was golden. It wasn't, and even they themselves recognized it (hence the amendment process for the Constitution, f'rinstance).
All giants have feet of clay. Those Americans who fetishize the Founding Fathers, however, overlook that basic fact of humanity.
