"Well, we all survived, didn't we?" does not support an argument in favor or against anything, because all the kids who didn't "make it" aren't here to represent. It's an anecdotal response to real world dangers.
I have actually heard women say this same exact thing in response to the "Back to Sleep" campaign despite the fact that it has reduced the number of SIDS deaths considerably. Sure, you survived, but plenty of other babies who were put on their stomachs to sleep because we didn't know any better didn't. If I jumped out of an airplane without a parachute and happened to survive, I'm pretty damn lucky, but my individual circumstance is not enough evidence to start telling people they are being "overly cautious" by using parachutes while sky diving.
