I don't know whether there's much to understand on a rational level. We're wired by evolution to be all up in arms and excited when we produce offspring. For me it was a mixture of worry (that something might go wrong, because the birth was kind of critical), strong instincts to protect my family from harm, sheer happiness to see a new family member, curiosity what a mix between my wife and myself would look like, and a sense of impending doom.
