Believers usually counter it by saying that they basically persue ideals of love and unity, so even if their are wrong, their fake idealistic goal are still better then average egoistical life of atheists.
So, if they are wrong, nothing bad happens if they were unnaturally caring or fearful of God, its still a noble life. If they were right, they become Gods "little angels". They position is much bitter or harder to live by, but its a win anyway.
