The reason, often enough, that a person has a reaction like that...and I'm referencing this in the general as a phenomena, is that they truly and deeply do not see themselves that way. The implication is personally damaging. Unfortunately (or fortunately-depending on how you look at it) for us there's a twilight between something like open and dismissive misogny and the cultural artifact of misogyny. When the misogynsts viewpoint has been ensconced as a cultural fact (as it has been) then it;s not just the misogynists who end up parroting it, and people need not -be- misogynists...in the fullest sense of the word, to repeat what they've heard. It's difficult to tell one from the other, ofc, from the outside.....and there's probably plenty of overlap, degrees of shaming, in context.
"I;m not a misogynist, but everyone knows that -x-" where x stands in for some subtle or not so subtle bit of misogyny. The person who says x rarely understands why a female (or anyone, really) would react to the statement the way that they do.....and that's saying something in and of itself. The perenial "I don;t know why you took it that way"...no, no -you- don't.
