Perhaps, but how often do you hear of someone escaping the clutches of a madman? Not as often as you hear about someone being murdered by one. The thing is, "neutralizing" someone who has a knife is not as easy as you make it sound, especially if the guy has crazy strength. I don't know about in Alaska, but we don't have local ninjas wondering around the grocery store. The safest bet would be to have a group of people ambush him. That would take too long to organize. Either way, the lady was dead.

Engage an unexpected enemy? It seems to me he had only one enemy in that grocery store. Unless he started stabbing me or I was armed and could help, I would not engage anyone. I do not fancy myself a traveling hero or ninja. Sometimes, barging in and jumping on a dude like it is a fucking video game is not the smartest thing to do. Besides, most of the people in the store were likely women and children.
